Welcome to the panel, Zephryn Taitte

6 Jul 2023

On Monday 10th July, Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Finalists will take to the stage of the Cambridge Theatre. Every speech is unique and inspiring in its own way, making it an incredibly tough decision to determine who the next Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Champion will be.

The panel consists of artists, presenters, athletes and campaigners all known for using their voice to create change. They will judge the competition based on the content, delivery, structure and positive impact of each speech and help us crown this years winner.

In no particular order, let’s meet the judges!

Zephyrn Taitte is an actor with multiple onstage credits. You may know him from ‘Call the Midwife’ or ‘Brothers with no Game’. Zephryn says, “It is extremely important to seek ways to find your voice. Finding your voice incorporates building confidence, self-awareness, knowledge of self and topics which will put people in good stead to speak with authority.”

We asked Zephryn, in your experience, what does it mean to find your voice?

It is extremely important to seek ways to finding your voice. Finding your voice incorporates building confidence, self-awareness, knowledge of self and topics which will put people in good stead to speak with authority. “

Why is empowering young people important to you?

“Empowering people in general is extremely important to me. But young people in particular are easily swayed and impressionable. Empowering young people to ask questions is the first step to building a better future for themselves. They must keep their inquisitive nature through adult hood. Too often are young people just told to obey. There is a place for that, but it mustn’t lead to a dimming of their natural thoughts and questions. It takes bravery and courage to question customs and rules but it must be done, even if it’s just to have a better understanding, not just taking things as is.”

What does communication mean to you?

Communication is more than just words. It’s body language, eye contact, being able to listen to peoples ideas and thoughts. All factors lead to a better experience when communicating and ultimately being able to express yourself clearly and effectively.”

Thinking about our young speakers, how can they provoke the change they want to see in the world?

By being true to oneself and obtaining thorough research.”
