Meet Grand Final judge Idris Debrand

4 Jul 2024

In just 4 days away, Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Finalists will take to the stage of the Cambridge Theatre. Every speech is unique and inspiring in its own way, making it an incredibly tough decision to determine who the next Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Champion will be, which is why we invited an esteemed panel of judges to take on that difficult task!

The panel consists of artists, presenters and campaigners all known for using their voice to create change. They will judge the competition based on the content, delivery, structure and positive impact of each speech and help us crown this years winner.

In no particular order, let’s meet the judges!

Idris Debrand won the Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Grand Final in 2010 and is back as a judge for this year’s Grand Final. He says he found his voice and confidence through speaking on the Grand Final stage. With the Speak Out Challenge birthing his acting career, Idris has gone on to appear in mainstream television and film & can be seen in Apple TV’s upcoming drama Sinking Spring.

In your experience, what does it mean to find your voice?

A. The ability to express yourself confidently & live your truth unapologetically.

Q · Why is empowering young people important to you?

A. I was once young & I know how much I looked up to older people for guidance and inspiration. As much as I definitely got that, I didn’t get much of it, so it’s important for me to be that role model and inspiration to young people.

Thinking about our young speakers, how can they provoke the change they want to see in the world?

A. First things first, they need to be the change they want to see. Lead by example, be steadfast, bold & consistent and people will gravitate towards that organically.

Finally, what advice would you have for young people today about taking part in programmes like the JPSOC and why communication is important?

A. The most important thing is to have fun – don’t take yourself too seriously. Enjoy it, because it will come and go super quickly! These skills are for life, and you will see it manifest in anything you end up doing as you get older.

Thank you Idris and see you on July 8th!
