Level 2 workshops: Skills training for Regional Champions 22-23

15 Feb 2024

Our Regional Champions 22-23, who participated in the Jack Petchey’s Speak Out Challenge Regional Finals last academic year, took part in further training in public speaking. The Level 2 workshop is offered to all Regional finalists who were successful at becoming Champions in their boroughs and see the benefits in honing their oracy skills.

Three groups of approximately 12 participants each were welcomed in the Jack Petchey Foundation Headquarters on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Each day, the room was filled with laughter, chatter and joy as all participants were happy to reconnect with each other and excited to engage in the day’s activities.

The sessions were led by our experienced trainers, Hilary Lyons and James Davies, who adapted the session to the group’s needs.

During Level 2 workshops, the participants are invited to recall their previous training, the Communication triangle and the tips and tricks they learned while preparing their speeches for the stage.

In this week’s session, they were invited to think on their feet, to react in improvised settings and situations, to speak eloquently and with passion about things they had never heard of before.

The training they received is adapted from the training we deliver to adult participants in corporate environments: skills like presenting and pitching an idea to a group, speaking confidently in an interview, reacting in work situations, formulating your thoughts and speaking about them in a cohesive way, are just a few of the examples the young Champions were invited to workshop and experiment with.

“The training expanded my knowledge on what makes a good public speaker, as well as the opportunity to meet other people and draw from their speaking skills to use in my speaking. I not only learnt from the brilliant teacher (Hilary) but from my peers in the room with me. Everyone was so nice, we bonded and learnt together. “

We are grateful and proud to see the participants’ energy, will and openness to follow up on their training. They see the value in learning and improving on these skills, and we are confident they will be incredible communicators that will take the world by storm.
